Jeff Ritter – Creating Spin!

By far, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is “how do I put more spin on my golf ball?” Well, if you are going to make that ball dance on command you will need to have the perfect combination of the following:

1. Perfect Lie – A clean, tight lie from the fairway is imperative as longer grass that gets stuck between the ball and the face will fill your grooves and take that spin away.

2. High Spin Ball – Not all golf balls are created equal! Make sure you research your ball’s performance characteristics to make sure you have the equipment to pull off what you are looking for.

3. Steep Angle of Attack – To put some extra juice on the ball, you’ll need to create some “pinch” between the club face, ball and turf. Attacking the ball with a slightly more downward decent will do the trick here.

4. Speed – Increased swing speed will increase the ball’s RPM’s giving you more stopping power. Imagine the attitude you would have striking a match on the back of a matchbook. Start a little fire at the bottom and you ball will sit with ease!

Routines – SEE – FEEL – TRUST

See – Feel – Trust

See

When building your routine make sure you take full advantage of your senses. This means beginning with a clear and precise mental picture of exactly what you want. The more precise the picture, the better chance you have of pulling it off. Example: 150 yard shot, 3 foot draw, landing four feet right of the cup and then spinning left into the hole. What your mind conceives, your body can achieve!

Feel

Now that you know what you want, take time to "rehearse" your perfect move. Just like a dress rehearsal in a play, this is your dry run to get it right. Once you feel like you got it, step and get ready to fire.

Trust

You’ve seen it; you’ve got the feel, now it comes down to trust. Trust is all about letting go, surrendering to the universe without any fear of what the outcome might be. It’s just like skydiving. If you’re not afraid to die, then you love it. If you’re afraid to die, you hate it. If you can just trust and let go, then you’re likely to have a lot more fun.

Pacing Your Swing

Most players only have one speed they swing at, "full throttle," whereas touring pros can execute the same swing at many speeds. Learning to develop more "gears" is the best way to learn to exert more control over your game and is especially helpful when making swing changes. To see what I am getting at, tee up 4 balls side by side. Make a "full size" swing and hit the first ball as if you were only swinging 25 mph. Hit the next shot at 50 mph, the third at 75 mph and finally the last at your full pace or 100 mph. This is a difficult drill that will over time create alot more discipline in your fundamentals and practice routine.
